The Kennebec Equipment Rental Outlaw Minis returned to Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday as part of an exciting Group #2 racing program. While Jimmy Childs was looking to go for two in a row in the division, his division rival, Zach Audet, was looking to reclaim his spot on the throne.
The racing action kicked off with a single 10 lap heat race. Ian Fraser fell victim to the outside groove on the initial start, losing a handful of spots as Tyler Dinsmore powered to the lead. The leaders took William Turner 3-wide on lap 3, resulting in a heated battle in turn 1. This led to a debris caution as something white went flying off of Zach Audet’s #19 machine. The yellow flag was a precautionary measure, but it turns out that the white debris was simply spray paint flakes coming off of Audet’s car.
Zach Audet powered ahead on the restart as both Jimmy Childs and Kyle Willette overtook Tyler Dinsmore for second and third. Jimmy Childs attempted to reel in Zach Audet in the closing laps, but Audet held him off, picking up the heat victory.
Bryan Robbins and Kyle Willette battled it out for the early lead in the 25-lap feature. Meanwhile, Zach Audet and Jimmy Childs ignited their own battle for position behind the leaders. The two drivers tangled on lap 2, resulting in Childs taking a wild spin in turn 4. While Childs was going around, he made hard contact with Wes Turner. This resulted in a yellow flag as Childs retired to the pits, ending his day prematurely. Zach Audet was forced to restart from the tail end of the field due to being part of the caution.
Bryan Robbins took off on the restart, but Zach Audet was on the move behind him. Audet quickly maneuvered from the rear to second, eventually taking over the lead on lap 13. His teammate, Travis Poulliot, was also on the move, challenging Bryan Robbins for the runner-up spot on lap 16.
While battling for position, Poulliot and Robbins tangled on lap 20 in turn 4, which resulted in Robbins going for a spin. While under caution, Poulliot took the “gentleman’s rule”, voluntarily going to the back of the pack for the restart while Bryan Robbins got his spot back.
Zach Audet maintained his advantage on the restart, but chaos ensued behind him as Tyler Dinsmore took a slide through the turn 1 grass and Bryan Robbins went around, making hard contact with the turn 2 wall. This resulted in another late-race caution.
Zach Audet powered ahead on the restart as Travis Poulliot and Tyler Dinsmore went head-to-head for the runner-up spot behind him. The two drivers remained door to door until the final lap, where Poulliot pulled ahead with the advantage.
Zach Audet held off Travis Poulliot to the finish, picking up his third win of the 2022 season in the division. Tyler Dinsmore, Ian Fraser and Bryan Robbins followed, rounding out the top five.
Zach Audet and Jimmy Childs continue to put on a heated battle every week in the Outlaw Minis, swapping the lead back and forth in tight points race. Who will be next to top the podium? Stay tuned to find out!
