Group #1 divisions returned to Wiscasset Speedway on Saturday night, which included the ultra competitive Super Streets division. 15 drivers showed up to compete in the 30-lap feature on Sunday, including some drivers like Matt Beers and Mike St. Pierre, who have competed at both Wiscasset Speedway and Beech Ridge Motor Speedway this season.
The Super Streets competition kicked off with two qualifying heats. Mike Wallace took over the early lead in the first heat. Colby Peacock was quick to steal the top spot away while Dominic Curit followed in succession. Mike Hodgkins was all over Dominic Curit for the runner-up spot on lap 5 and eventually overtook the position the following lap.
It was a brotherly battle on lap 6 as Dominic and Devin Curit squared up for third on lap 6, with Devin Curit advancing position the following lap. Colby Peacock held off the competition for the remainder of the race, scoring his first career heat victory as Mike Hodgkins and Devin Curit rounded out the top 3.
PJ Merrill and Mike Harrison went head to head for the early lead in the second qualifying heat before Merrill pulled ahead with the advantage. James Osmond was coming through the field early, knocking on Harrison’s door for the runner-up spot on lap 2 and taking over the position the following lap.
Osmond continued his pursuit on lap 6, making his way to PJ Merrill’s outside, battling for the lead. Osmond quickly took over the lead and began pulling away from his competitors. Matt Beers was also on the move in the closing laps, going door to door with Mike Harrison for third. The two drivers battled it out until the conclusion of the heat, where Beers beat Harrison to the line as James Osmond and PJ Merrill secured the top 2 spots.
Mike Hodgkins and Colby Peacock went head to head for the early lead in the 30-lap feature, but Peacock was able to hold a slight advantage over Hodgkins as the Curit brothers battled it out for position behind them. Devin Curit pulled away with the advantage over Dominic on lap 4, then setting his sights on the leaders on front of him.
James Osmond was in hot pursuit of the leaders early, overtaking fourth from Dominic Curit on lap 8. He then made his way to Devin Curit’s door on lap 10, quickly taking over third before joining the leaders in the front pack. The top 3 drivers had broken away from the rest of the pack by the halfway mark of the race.
James Osmond was all over Mike Hodgkins for third on lap 18. Osmond made his way to Hodgkins’ door on lap 19, overtaking him for the runner-up spot. Matt Beers was also coming to life in the second half of the race, breaking the top 5 on lap 20. Shawn Austin took a hard spin on the backstretch on lap 22, but the field remained green as he recovered and kept rolling.
Matt Beers was still on the move on lap 23, stealing fourth away from Devin Curit. James Osmond was hungry for the lead in the closing laps, on Colby Peacock’s tail with just three laps to go. Dominic Curit took a spin on lap 28 in turn 4, but the field remained green.
James Osmond pulled to Colby Peacock’s door on the final lap of the feature, making a final push for the lead. The two drivers went door to door through turns 1 and 2 before Osmond took a spin in turn 3, resulting in a devastating end to an otherwise great day for the #05 team. The shocking turn of events completely stirred up the top five.
Peacock sailed into turn 4, capturing his first career Super Streets victory after leading all 30 laps of the feature. Mike Hodgkins, Matt Beers, Devin Curit and PJ Merrill rounded out the top five.
The Super Streets division remains highly competitive and has seen 3 different winners in Victory Lane so far in 2021. It’ll be interesting seeing who else breaks the mold and makes it to the top of the podium in the division this season!
